Hillwalking

The area between Ullapool in the south and Cape Wrath and Durness in the north is truly remote. There are few habitations and few roads making this a great area to explore. Whilst not wild like the Cairngorms, nor craggy like the western highlands, the area is a remote wilderness, enhancing the outdoor experience.

There are 4 Munros (hills over 300ft) in the area but these are not the biggest and the best. The 7 jewels of Assynt take this accolade. These hills just grow out from the sea with many interesting and distinctive shapes. Hills such as Stac Pollaidh and Suilven are unlike anything else in the UK. These are hills that stand out when viewed from other hills summits, or indeed from the coast. This is the land for the true hillwalker.

Paddling

Where is the best place to kayak in the UK? It is the north west edge of Scotland.
Here the sea here is clear, not the grey of the North Sea but blue clear water. The area is the sea kayaker's paradise. Whilst the headlands can be exciting, paddling around the bays and inlets can be of equal quality.

Perhaps the jewel here is paddling around the isles - the Summer Isles. These are within easy reach of the coast and are relatively sheltered. On a summer day this is one of the best sea kayaking areas in Scotland if not the world. However don't be fooled; sometimes the sea can be rough when going out could be foolhardy.
